In the movie "Saving Mr. Banks," Walt Disney explained his difficult childhood story to P.L. Travers. He doesn't tell her the story to make her sad. "Rare is the day that I don't think about that eight-year-old boy delivering newspapers in the snow and old Elias Disney with that strap in his fist. Am I am just so tired. Mrs. Travers, I'm tired of remembering it that way. Aren't you tired, too, Mrs. Travers? Now we all have our sad tales, but don't you want to finish the story? Let it all go and have a life that isn't dictated by the past?...George Banks will be redeemed. Now, maybe not in life, but in imagination. Because that's what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again."
Why this book and why now? I listen to all Brene Brown’s podcasts, and the authors were on one of them. I was so captivated by this topic of trauma, since the word usually evokes the worst situations imaginable. Yet, I was captivated because they both gently and compassionately share what trauma is, what it isn’t, and how to build resilience into our lives. They are advocates of everyone becoming more aware of trauma and how it effects our lives. I found this book incredible for me to reflect on my own instances of trauma, how it’s affected me, and how I’ve learned the signs of trauma to be able to advocate for myself (for myself, with my health care providers, and to bring this book into this space). Not sure that “excited” is the right word, but I am grateful that this book exists and that we get to make our way through it over the next few months…nice and slow, a chapter a week!
